Sukemi, an expert staff to the Minister of Education and Culture for communication and media, wrote this opinion article highlighting the importance of teacher and student handbooks production and teacher training in ensuring successful implementation of the new 2013 curriculum. Public concerns and criticism of teachers’ readiness was understandable considering the unsatisfactory results of last year’s teacher competency test, in which the country’s teachers scored an average of 43.82. However, the ministry has developed solid training guidelines for master teachers, core teachers and regular teachers. In addition, the ministry will also strengthen mentoring and monitoring functions of both central and regional governments. The ministry will also make sure that the new student and teacher handbooks will be provided for free.
