The Jakarta Provincial Government has opened the way for the city’s most popular state high schools to charge students fees, despite the fact that high school education is supposed to be free under the Education Operational Assistance (BOP) program.

Taufik Yudi Mulyanto, the head of the Jakarta Provincial Education Agency, said that requests from the schools to be allowed to charge fees were still being studied by representatives of the school committees at SMA 8, SMA 70, SMA 61, SMA 81, and Madrasah Aliyah Negeri 4. The representatives are grouped in the Education Quality Concern Forum.
