The Chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR)’ Special Committee on the Curriculum, Adianto, said that education was one of the yardsticks of the progress of a nation, other than economic yardsticks. The Indonesian nation was benefitting from a demographic bonus, between 2010 and 2013. He said that the establishment of the special team was due to complaints that the 2013 curriculum was onerous. Onerous in the sense that there was an increase in the number of subjects and study hours. Thus, the special committee had been established to provide comprehensive recommendations from all stakeholders so that the curriculum could be improved.
After visits to a number of provinces and regencies/municipalities, it had been found that the principal problem was the preparedness of teachers at the local level, and the fact the the teachers were concerned that the curriculum was too inflexible.
