Islamic Universities (PTAI) are currently still inferior in the competition with other universities of public in nature. The cause, according to the Minister of Religious Affairs, Suryadharma Ali, is the dichotomy between religious science and other sciences. Islamic education institutions, according to him, must begin to widen their wings to integrate the sciences available in the Koran. According to him, the Koran is not only about religious science. He alleged there were possible mistakes in the past which had separated the religious science from other sciences.

In order to keep up with the lag behind the other universities, the Ministry of Religious Affairs is going to facilitate Islamic Universities to change status. The Ministry is now revising the requirements for Islamic Universities to change their status in line with their surrounding conditions. This is also to widen the access of education for Indonesian people.
