Lecturers express concern

Indonesian intellectuals, including university lecturers, who are members of various professional associations have issued a statement of concern about the Constitutional Court’s judicial review of Law No. 12 of 2012 on Higher Education.

The said they were concerned that academic freedom and university autonomy could be threatened if Law No. 12 of 2012 were to be struck down, as had happened with the Educational Entities Law.

Among the signatories to the statement were Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro (institute Teknologi Bandung), Sofan Effendi (Universitas Gadjah Mada), Mayling Oei-Gardiner and Usman Khatib Warsa (University of Indonesia), Herry Suhardiyanto and Ari Purbayanto (institute Pertanian Bogor), and Amirudin (Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia).

They said that the justices of the Constitutional Court should rule on the matter based on their own consciences and having regard to the need to develop higher education in Indonesia.
