The new 2013 curriculum will introduce a fundamental change in Indonesian language learning by making it the main tool to teach other subjects under the text-based learning methods, said Mahsum, head of the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Language Development and Supervision Agency. The change in line with the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) that put emphasis on the role of language in shaping students’ thought. The emphasis on Indonesian language is supported by a Dutch education observer, Annie Makkink, who argued that Indonesian language, not English or other foreign languages, is the most appropriate language to use as medium of instruction in Indonesian schools.
