Starting in the 2013 academic year, some 28,745 students of state-owned senior vocational schools (SMA/SMK) in Bekasi will be able to enjoy free education thanks to a new subsidy program initiated by the city administration. The city has allocated Rp55 billion in its 2013 budget for the subsidy program, said Ali Fauzi, an official at the city’s education office. Currently, senior secondary school students in Bekasi received subsidy worth Rp1 million and Rp200,000 annually through the student operational assistance pilot program run respectively by the central and West Java provincial governments.
