Teacher training methods needed to be changed because the current ones are inadequate, according to education experts such as Professor Satryo Soemantri Brodjonegoro and Professor Iwan Pranoto of the Bandung Institute of Technology and Sulistiyo of the  the Teachers Association of the Republic of Indonesia (PGRI). They said teacher education and training institutes (LPTKs) should improve their teacher training methods, which for years have been focusing too much on the pedagogy issues and failed to encourage teachers to develop their social skills and completely master their subject materials. Adding to the problems is a lack of enthusiasm, motivation and creativity among many teachers, which resulted in their students failing to get proper understanding of the subjects as reflected in the poor scores of Indonesian students in the recent global academic assessments such as TIMSS, PIRLS and PISA.
