The city administration of Blitar in East Java is facing a dilemma regarding five local Catholic schools, which have been accused by the local office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs of violating the National Education System Law by not providing religious subject teachers for students of different faiths. The religious affairs office has recommended that the city administration close down the five schools from primary to senior secondary levels owned and run by the Yohanes Gabriel Catholic Educational Foundation. A city official said the administration could not simply close the schools because they have for years been providing education for many children in the city.
