State universities will no longer charge the one-off upfront admission starting in the upcoming 2013 academic year, said chairman of the Council of Indonesian State Universities, Idrus Paturusi. State universities will begin implementation of the single flat tuition system toward the end of 2013. He said the two new changes were in compliance with the Ministry of Education and Culture’s instruction. To offset the loss of revenues from scrapping the fee, the government will provide state universities with bigger amount of the state university operational assistance (BOPTN). Education observer Darmanintyas suggested the government make a significant increase in its state university subsidies in order to ensure the new policy creates the expected impact.
