The article highlights the fact that holding a university degree does not guarantee a job. The number of university graduates without jobs has been increasing in the past several years, reaching 1.2 million in 2009 from 740,000 in 2007 and 473,000 in 2006, according to a Central Statistics Agency (BPS) data. In 2008, 12.8% of university graduates were unemployed, higher than the country’s overall unemployment rate of 8.4%. Experts attributed this mainly to the mismatch between available jobs and the skills of graduates. Universities are therefore urged to forge ties with the industry to help the students gaining relevant and practical knowledge as well as entrepreneur skills in addition to all the theories.
