In this opinion article, CIE-Indonesia Belajar initiators Syamsir Alam and Evy I Siregar highlights some room of improvements for state schools with international standard status (SBI) particularly in three areas: curriculum, teaching, and leadership. Syamsir and Evy said SBI schools should offer a holistic teaching-learning process to allow students to progress according to their talents and interests. They pointed at IB Schools’ curriculum as an example. IB Schools have carefully designed their curriculum so that it will help students to become inquirers, thinkers, communicators, knowledgeable, principled, caring, open-minded, well-balanced, and reflective. In the area of teaching, the two urged SBI teachers to have sound knowledge of each particular subject, be able to manage classes efficiently, and have solid pedagogy, cognitive thinking and education appraisal skills. As for the leadership aspect, the two highlighted the vital role of principals in creating stimulating, non-repressive and non-authoritarian learning environment in their schools. Principals being the instructional leaders should have sound knowledge and skills to lead the schools to meet international standards and quality, including by ensuring the quality of teachers and teaching practices.
